What is a brow lift?
A brow lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to reverse the signs of aging of the brows.
Youthful brows in women are located 1cm above the orbital rim, with a gentle arch or curve. The outer (lateral) brow is slightly higher than the inner (medial) brow. In men, the ideal brows are straight and are located at the orbital rim. Aging causes descent of the brows, mainly of the outer brows near the temple (laterally).
A brow lift procedure aims to raise the eyebrows to create a more youthful upper face. Additionally, depending on the technique, brow lifts can also diminish forehead wrinkles and minimize frown lines.
Who is the ideal candidate for a brow lift procedure?
The ideal candidates for a brow lift procedure are usually individuals who have the following:
- Eyebrow flattening or descent
- Excess skin or hooding between the lateral brows and the upper eyelids
- Depending on the technique, brow lift surgery may also address forehead wrinkles and frown (glabellar) lines.
What does a brow lift procedure consist of?
A brow lift procedure is usually performed under general or local anesthesia.
There are various techniques for the procedure:
- Lateral brow lift (or temporal brow lift): A temporal brow lift addresses the lateral (outer) brow. This procedure involves a small incision near the temple, either hidden in the hairline or at the hairline margin, in order to create inconspicuous scars.
- Coronal brow lift: This procedure addresses lateral (outer) and medial (inner) eyebrow descent. It involves a large incision behind the forehead hairline. This technique is mainly used for patients with a low hairline. It has fallen out of favor due to less invasive techniques such as endoscopic brow lifts.
- Anterior hairline incision: This technique is ideal for patients with a high hairline. It involves an incision a few millimeters behind the anterior hairline. This procedure addresses lateral (outer) and medial (inner) eyebrow descent. Forehead redraping is also possible with this technique (forehead wrinkles).
- Direct excision: This technique involves raising the eyebrows throw an excision of skin above the brows or in the middle forehead. Patients who have deep wrinkles (usually older men) might benefit from this technique, as the final scar will be hidden in the natural wrinkle.
- Endoscopic brow lift: This technique is a minimally invasive alternative to coronal brow lifts. Three to five small incisions are made behind the hairline, and dissection of the forehead is performed with the help of a camera and long instruments. The final scars are small and concealed in the hairline.
