Labiaplasty of the Labia Minora

labiaplasty of labia minora

What is a labiaplasty of the labia minora?

Labiaplasty (also known as labial reduction, labia minora reduction, nymphoplasty) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces excess folds of skin and soft tissues present in the labia minora.

The labia minora refers to the the inner lips of the vulva. Women seek labiaplasty for aesthetics reasons (excessive protrusion of the labia minora) or inability to wear certain undergarments. Certain women also experience discomfort, hygiene difficulties, pain due to friction with clothes, and painful intercourse due to the interfering labia minora.

Who is the right candidate for labia minora reduction?

An ideal candidate for vaginal rejuvenation or labia minora reduction has experienced significant labial changes or has a significantly large labia minora.

The procedure may also be recommended for anyone experiencing physical discomfort when cycling, sitting down, or during intercourse. It is also recommended for individuals who are self-conscious about their labia minora size and are dissatisfied with its appearance.

The labia minora should not be confused with the labia majora, or outer labia (please refer to labiaplasty of the labia majora for more details).

What does labia minora surgery involve?

Labia surgery of the labia minora is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation. There are two main techniques for the reduction of the labia minora: trim resection and wedge resection. After the reduction is completed, dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision. Intercourse and strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.
