Removal of Implants with Capsulectomy

Removal of implants with capsulectomy

What is the removal of Implants with Capsulectomy?

The goal of explant surgery is to remove breast implants from patients who have undergone breast reconstruction or a breast augmentation. Women may choose to remove their implants for medical or personal reasons.

Who is the right candidate for a capsulectomy?

There are many reasons for explant surgery. In some cases, women who have previously underwent breast augmentation develop larger natural breasts over the years (due to pregnancy, weight gain etc.). Implant removal (explant surgery) is often desired by these patients.

Women may also choose to remove their implants after a rupture, without replacing them. A breast lift (mastopexy) can be combined with implant removal to achieve an aesthetic result.

Anyone with a breast implant can consider explant surgery. This procedure can be performed with or without a total capsulectomy.

What does a total capsulectomy procedure consist of?

During an explant procedure, the implant capsule may be removed with the implant, a surgical procedure known as capsulectomy.

A total capsulectomy (removal of the entire capsule) is generally possible when removing implants that were placed above the muscle (subglandular plane). If the implant was placed deep to the muscle, a total capsulectomy might not always be possible. If the posterior (deep) capsule is stuck on the chest wall, removing it may lead to injury and complications such as a pneumothorax (air around the lungs). In these cases, a partial capsulectomy may be a safer option.

It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of total capsulectomies with your plastic surgeon.

What is the cost of a capsulectomy?

The cost of capsulectomy generally depends on the treatment plan that is developed. Adjunctive procedures might impact the final cost.
